In Ben-Hur the Romans speak with British accents and the Jews speak with American accents. In the one kissing scene, Wayne seems to be biting Turner's jugular while holding his breath rather than exuding any passion. She leaves Jeff, vowing to get even with Karl. Things perk up briefly when there's a shark attack, but when one of the most interesting things in the film is an ingenious plan to lure rats off the ship, you've got trouble. Lana Turner and the Hawaiian locations are lovely. Lana Terner seems to be suitable for this part and I can't say thet there was no chemistry at all between them. The difference being, that no one attempted an accent, and in good old Americana, it made the part more credible. She spends most of the movie walking around the deck of the old freighter impeccably dressed and coiffed, looking like Marilyn Monroe's older, more serious sister. He was excellent in this, no less than in his villain roles. After his ship has been refitted and refueled, Karl prepares for the remainder of his journey, expecting that most of his crew will choose to stay in Valparaiso. Though using the same basic plot as the film, the book painted Kirchner as the hero and Ehrlich as the villain, essentially swapping their roles; the book portrays Kirchner and Keller as unintended victims of Erlich's obsession, though in both stories, the key characters all appear to go down with the ship at the climax. It was directed by John Farrow and written by James Warner Bellah. In spite of her famous looks and figure, Lana exudes a chill towards most of the men in the film, although she tempts the sex-starved crew with tightly filled sweaters from her private deck. Napier introduces Ehrlich to his new fiancée, Elsa Keller, whom the German captain recognizes from a previous encounter. Ehrlich is a former member of the German Navy who lost his rank and position; refusing to support the Nazi Party. Elsa comes to appreciate Karl's integrity and strong convictions, and shares with him her struggle for survival after the suicide of her father. Occasionally we see a British destroyer, supposedly looking for Wayne, but they never actually encounter each other. The Ergenstrasse sits in the port of Sydney, Australia on the eve of the Second World War. It is only after the Ergenstrasse slips out of harbor in thick fog that Ehrlich discovers the spy is Elsa. The discovery of the bodies makes the British even more determined to catch the Ergenstrasse. Instead of burying Stemme at sea, Karl leaves the injured Winkler and sickly Max on the island to bury him, knowing that they will be found and treated by the doctor aboard the Rockhampton.
Meanwhile, Germany has invaded Poland, and war is imminent. Then they have given the role of the captain to that excowboy. Who certainly played a lot of villains too! I'm a big fan of The Sea Chase. Chief Officer Kirchner Tab Hunter. His big plot involves going swimming alone with another young pretty boy, who gets bit by a shark. The Sea Chase is a rare film for it's time and subject.
Napier, obsessed with finding Ehrlich, requests a transfer to the British Naval ships in the North Sea; believing that Ehrlich must pass through the patrols in his attempt to reach Germany. I know this is really late. This is one slow-paced and uneventful chase. Aboard his vessel is Elsa Keller, a woman Ehrlich has been ordered to return to Germany safely along with whatever secrets she carries. He played many supporting roles in the movies before going on to many famous parts on television. The ship pulls out of harbor and heads to a tropical island to get wood to burn as fuel for the trip home. Lana's performance is on a par with Wayne, handling the part with facile authority.
